The Trails

There so many amazing Laurel Highlands hiking trails in Ohiopyle State Park! The park offers more than 27 miles of trails, and the Baughman Trail is one of the best. This 4.8-mile loop takes you along the river and deep through the forest. You can marvel at the trees during your ascent and enjoy a jaw-dropping view of the Youghiogheny River Gorge from Baughman Rock at the top.

Tip: This trail ideal for more experienced hikers, as it features some steep elevation and rocky terrain.

The Waterfalls

The park is cut in half by the Youghiogheny River Gorge, which provides excellent wildlife viewing and a place to cool off on hot summer days. As you hike through the park, you will encounter some beautiful waterfalls, including the famous Cucumber Falls! This 30-foot cascade is only 100 yards from the parking area. Don’t forget to explore the River Trail that takes you past the water slides at Meadow Run Creek and all the way to Cascade falls.

Pack the Right Equipment

The most important thing you need to do before heading out into the woods is to pack the right items. Determine how long you will be gone for, and, most importantly, what the weather will be like. Here are some essential items you’ll want to consider for your day hike:

  • A daypack (and trekking poles, if you need them)

  • Hiking boots or shoes
  • Food & water
  • Compass and a map of the area
  • First-aid kit
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Insect repellent
  • Blister treatments
  • Knife
  • … Anything else you see fit!
