The History Behind the Compass Inn Museum

Since 1814, the Compass Inn has been a treasure in the Laurel Highlands. This local gem is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is actually a restored stagecoach shop. Now, the Compass Inn Museum opens its doors to thousands of visitors annually and provides an in-depth look at the enthralling history of Ligonier. 

Guided Tours

The Compass Inn Museum offers guided journeys Tuesday through Sunday from May to October. On your tour, you’ll be swept away on a 1.5-hour adventure around the historic grounds. The local expert leads you through original Compass Inn and teaches you about its incredible history. In addition, you’ll pass by beautifully reconstructed structures including the cookhouse, blacksmith shop, and barn. Each of these buildings is adorned with period pieces and exact replicas that commemorate the lifestyle of the 19th century.

Incredible Events

In affiliation with the Ligonier Valley Historical Society, the Compass Inn Museum hosts two enriching events every year. Every April, the “Taste of Town” provides samples of delectable treats and an inviting atmosphere for all. And, in early May, there is a celebration for the grand re-opening of the Compass Inn Museum! These two events are designed to commemorate the history of our area and allow visitors to interact with the locals.
