Here’s How to Organize Your Five Star Trail Hike
Get to Know the Trail
The Five Star Trail is the perfect escape in nature if you want to unwind and breathe in the fresh air of the forest. It runs right through Westmoreland County for 8 miles and follows an active railroad track that stretches between Lynch Field, Greensburg City Park, and Youngwood.
You don’t have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy this trail. It’s mostly flat, which makes it a prime location for hiking, jogging, biking, and even cross-country skiing during the winter. It’s also handicap-accessible.
The Annual Five Star Trail Poker Run
Every July, the trail hosts the Five Star Trail Poker Run. It’s the perfect event for those who enjoy both hiking and fundraising. This 12-mile bike ride (or 4-mile walk) benefit the trail and gives it the financial support it needs. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the day of the event and the run itself takes place between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. We encourage you to register online (it’s cheaper)! Pre-registration costs $20 compared to $25 the day of. Tasty snacks and drinks will be on sale, and each participant gets a free T-shirt!
More Trails to Explore
Make the most of your trip to the Laurel Highlands by exploring other amazing trails! Ohiopyle State Park features more than 27 trails, some of which are the most popular in the area, (especially the Youghiogheny River Trail). It’s a gorgeous 11-mile walk along the river and under shady trees. You can even pack a picnic to enjoy by the water.
The Baughman Trail is also in Ohiopyle and offers gorgeous views of the Appalachian region. It’s a beautiful 4.8-mile loop that takes you all the way up to Baughman Rock— we highly recommend you bring your camera. The views from up there are breathtaking!
