Spend an Epic Day at Forbes State Forest
Forbes State Forest is one of Pennsylvania’s most precious gems. These 60,000 acres of land in the Laurel Highlands offer unique natural features that make for the perfect day-long excursion. The forest is home to Mount Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania, as well as spruce flats bog, the Roaring Run Natural Area, and the Quebec Run Wild Area. With more than 300 miles of hiking trails, the park gives travelers the opportunity to get lost in nature and reconnect with their true self.
Start your day with a hot cup of coffee and a well-packed backpack. If you are an adventurer looking to explore Forbes State Forest, here are three activities we recommend: hiking, bouldering, and fishing. Combine these three and you will experience the forest to its fullest.
Tip: Weight your equipment before you leave! The less you have to carry, the more effective you will be. You should be aiming for no more than 20 pounds. Put on comfortable shoes and don’t forget to wear high-rise socks underneath! (Also pack poison ivy cream, just in case.)
The Perfect Itinerary for the Ultimate Adventurer
Begin your journey on the Laurel Highland hiking trail. Marvel at the beauty of the setting around you: the trees, the wind, the birds hiding in the leaves. Listen to their soothing songs and the sounds of a distant river flowing over cold rocks. Everything is calmer, quieter, and more serene. Let yourself be overwhelmed by this spiritual wilderness experience.
The complex trail takes you through some pretty remote areas that stretch from the banks of Youghiogheny River to the Conemaugh Gorge near Johnstown. Be ready to use your energy, as some steep climbs require more effort than others. In these moments, the most important thing to remember is to breathe – your lungs will thank you. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water!
After all that effort, it’s time to stop for lunch. Find a peaceful spot and enjoy a revitalizing meal. A sandwich, protein bar, or an apple will help boost your energy for the rest of the day. Once you’ve regained your strength, head over to the Beam Rocks Trail for some afternoon fun.
If you like rock climbing and own some climbing shoes, put them on and try out the park’s sweet boulders. You’ll find easy problems (V0 and V1) near the cliffs and a few harder ones on the main trail (V5-7) for more experienced climbers. It’s recommended to have at least one person to spot you, so if you are on your own, try and stick with another group of climbers. For bouldering masters, Forbes State Forest also has great highball problems on the western side of the cracks as well as some good opportunities for trad climbing.
Another fantastic way to spend the day is to go fishing. If you are willing to explore, the Laurel Highland Trail offers impeccable spots to catch trout. Keep in mind that these streams are not easy to find, and a lot of determination and camouflage skills are required. They are usually heavily canopied by dense trees and are low and clear.
Forget about the big gear; you want to go light. Rolling a cast and dabbling the fly over the rocks will be enough. Even though this type of fishing might be more difficult, it’s all worth it when you experience the transcending beauty of nature around you and the solitary mediation that results. Witness a waterfall down the river, the logs of wood stopping the ongoing flow of the water, and the ferns and laurel along the path. Trust us when we say it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.
