History of the Laurel Caverns

The Laurel Highlands are a spectacular environment for outdoor activities like hiking, but did you know there’s more under all the fabulous state parks than you think? The Laurel Caverns are the largest caves in Pennsylvania and some of the deepest caves in the Northeast U.S. These sandstone caves are a sight to behold and feature more than three miles of passageways that you can explore. It also happens to be one of the most significant homes to bats in the country. For that reason, the caves are closed during the colder months (between October and April) to let the animals hibernate properly.

What You Can Do at the Caverns

There are several tours per day you can take at the Laurel Caverns. The tours last about an hour and take you through lighted passages along the cavern’s labyrinth. Note that you have to walk about three miles and go up and downstairs, so it might not be suitable for people with physical limitations. Remember to bring a jacket! The temperature down there can reach 52 degrees —it might get chilly.

Tours cost $14 per adult, $12 for seniors and children aged 6 to 12. Children younger than that have a special $10 rate.
