Go on a 19th Century Journey with the Ligonier Valley Historical Society
A Mission to Protect and Display the Local History
The Ligonier Valley Historical Society was founded in 1964 by the Ligonier Valley Women’s Club. Wanting to honor the community’s heritage, they set out to illustrate and protect its general history. Starting with the Compass Inn, a former stagecoach, the Ligonier Valley Historical Society continued to restore and maintain historical landmarks. Their most recent project was the preservation of The Laurel Hill Iron Furnace. Built in 1846 and operated until 1855, it’s one of Pennsylvania’s oldest iron furnaces.
The Compass Inn Museum
The Compass Inn Museum is an authentic stagecoach shop from 1799 bought and restored by The Ligonier Valley Historical Society in the 1960’s. History comes alive in this museum, which is entirely furnished with period pieces. Experience what it was like to be a guest in a 19th-century hotel for yourself! An hour-long tour takes you through the barn, the blacksmith shop, and the cookhouse, and gives you valuable insight on what travel looked like 150 years ago.
The Compass Inn Museum is open May through October. This marvelous place offers field trips, lectures, as well as a small historical library. They also host seasonal and social events in the fall and winter.
