The History Behind the Theater
The Mountain Playhouse has a long-standing history in the Laurel Highlands. The theater has been in operation for over 79 years! It’s the oldest stock theater and one of only 12 professional summer theaters in the United States. The theater itself is a restored 1805 gristmill. Today, it seats 393 people, has a snack bar, and offers an incredibly scenic view of the lake. You can even marvel at some local artists’ paintings in the art gallery (near the lobby) before your show starts.
Every summer, the Playhouse produces a variety of exciting shows such as musicals, dramas, and comedies. Each of them runs for a couple of weeks before switching to the next, so make sure you plan accordingly if you want to see a specific one! The actors are members of the Actor’s Equity Association and have been since 1939. You’re sure to see skillful interpretations! The Playhouse also employs directors from the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, as well as musicians from the American Federation of Music.
