Dive Into America’s History at the National Road Festival

A Historic Road

The National Road Festival is an incredible experience for any history buff. Not only is it a fun way to spend the weekend, but it’s also a marvelous way to live out history.

The National Road expands across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ohio. The 90-mile corridor in southwestern Pennsylvania takes you though some of the most iconic places in United States history. Visit Uniontown where the Declaration of Independence was ratified, or explore the Fort Necessity National Battlefield where the Indian and French war broke out on July 3, 1754. Visit this monument during the festival and learn how it shaped George Washington’s leadership and military skills. It’s there that he started envisioning the creation of a national road to “unite a nation and inspire generations.” He became the first president of the United States in 1789 and began the construction work in 1811. It was completed twenty years later.

The Festival

The National Road Festival, also known as the Annual National Pike Festival, is held every year on the third weekend of May. It takes place in several towns and communities like Somerset, Fayette, and Washington County. A variety of activities are available to you wherever you stop, including:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Live music
  • Vendors
  • Food and drinks

The festival is a fantastic activity for couples and families. Take an epic road trip through beautiful Pennsylvania landscapes and have some fun along the way! A procession of historical wagons make the journey and stop in every town, as do carriages, horse-drawn conveyances, and horseback riders. Join this impressive parade and travel back to the 1800’s at the National Road Festival.
