Experience Art like Never Before at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art

A Community Museum at the Heart of the Laurel Highlands

Paying a visit to the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) is a fantastic way to spend the afternoon. Take a break from hiking and step into the world of Pennsylvania’s artists! The museum is spread out in several locations across the Laurel Highlands, including the towns of Altoona, Bedford, Johnstown, Ligonier, and Loretto.

This community museum was founded in 1976 and constitutes the “nation’s longest-running museum satellite system.” The idea behind its creation was to bring culture to a largely rural and underserved population. Today, the permanent collection includes more than 4,000 works by local and national artists, and the museum offers top-notch, award-winning programs that contribute to the artistic production of the region. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of art in Pennsylvania and America, then SAMA is the place for you.

The SAMA in Ligonier is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays and for holidays.

Annual Exhibition in Ligonier

Between November and February, the SAMA hosts an annual exhibition, and you could attend it! Take a look at some of their finest pieces, all displayed in a historical log cabin in Ligonier. Come admire the collection of work from local artists, which includes more than 60  paintings, pastels, photographs, watercolors, wood sculptures, and other fabulous creations.
