Experience the 110th Annual Stahlstown Flax Scutching Festival
As you walk around the Stahlstown Flax Scutching Festival, you’ll see locals dressed in traditional attire from the late 1800s and providing a glimpse at life before the Industrial Revolution in the Laurel Highlands. We urge you to bring cash and read over our local insights before attending this year’s festivities!
When It All Began
In 1907, Elmer N. Miller, the Justice of Peace in our town, instituted the Stahlstown Flax Scutching Festival. The cultural celebration continued but took a hiatus during World War II but returned in 1948 and has been continued every year since. If you have not heard of “scutching,” the process of scutching began in ancient India and other parts of Asia and eventually was introduced to our ancestors at the turn of the 20th century. In layman terms, it’s four-step method of harvesting flax plants and spinning the fibers into clothing. As you walk around the festival, several locals have perfected this craft and will perform live demonstrations to teach you about the process!
In addition to the cloth-making demonstration, there are several other exciting events at this year’s Stahlstown Flax Scutching Festival. As you walk around, you’ll hear the sounds the live music playing, the sights of craft booths lining the grounds, and the smells of homemade foods. When you walk around, visit the Civil War and covered wagon exhibits as well as watch a staged Indian raid. You don’t want to miss out on this fascinating cultural display!
The Car, Motorcycle, and Truck Show is typically held in June. This special event begins at Montique Grove and is a caravan down Route 711 in Stahlstown. All proceeds from this car showcase benefit the Stahlstown Flax Scutching Festival!
