Explore the Local Museums
Western Pennsylvania is a dream come true for explorers and history buffs. Our state had been at the heart of American history for centuries and offers many opportunities to uncover its secrets for curious visitors. For example, Fort Ligonier is only ten minutes away from Oak Lodge! This fortress once served as a link in British communication during the Pontiac War. Spanning over 8 acres, this beautiful historic site takes you back to the mid-18th century and shows you the ins and outs of an old fort. You also can stop in the incredible on-site museum filled with war memorabilia, documents, artifacts, and many more pieces of history.
If you would rather see one of the most popular architectural homes in the nation, you’ll find it here in the Laurel Highlands. Fallingwater was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, an internationally acclaimed architect, who designed this house specifically for the Kauffman family. This modern home sits atop a waterfall and is open to the public. It’s also registered as a National Historic Landmark! Make sure to schedule your tour ahead of time.
Go Wine Tasting
If you are a wine connoisseur, you’re already familiar with American wines and the famous Napa Valley, but did you know Pennsylvania also offers an incredible selection of high-end wineries? During your weekend in Western PA, add a wine tasting to your itinerary! For example, delight in the wonderful blends of exceptional wine at Glades Pike Winery. It’s just an 18-mile drive from Oak Lodge in Somerset, PA, and is open seven days a week. You’re able to walk around the stunning venue with a glass of their signature red or white wine. If you want to tour their vineyards, you’ll get all of the insider information on winemaking when booking a tour. Be sure to call at least a day in advance to reserve your tasting and tour.
