Explore the Different Areas of the Laurel Highlands

Stahlstown & Donegal

If you love hiking, then you’re in luck! The Stahlstown and Donegal area, where Oak Lodge is located, is a dream come true for adventurers. Start your day by hiking along the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, then visit the Living Treasures Animal Park to get up close and personal with wildlife! If you are visiting in the winter and wish to enjoy seasonal sports, head over to the Seven Springs Mountain Resort or Laurel Mountain State Park and go skiing!

If you’re a history buff, then the Ligonier area is where you want to go. The Laurel Highlands was a flourishing area even before 1776 and played an important role in the French and Indian War. Indeed, General George Washington took his first stand here! Learn more about the rich American history in our area by visiting the Fort Ligonier Museum, Compass Inn Museum, or the Ligonier Valley Railroad Museum. Or, spend a morning at the Ligonier Country Market browsing local goods.

If you’d rather take it easy during your vacation and enjoy some well-deserved retail therapy, then the antique stores in Somerset are perfect. Within each of them, you’ll learn a little more about our history, and you can take a piece of it home with you! Peruse several excellent antique shops, then go sip on local wine at Glades Pike Winery. We recommend driving to the numerous historic covered bridges from the 1870s and 80s on your way back. It makes for a scenic road trip!

If you’re part of the niche that loves architecture, you are well-aware of the works of Frank Lloyd Wright. Did you know you can tour one of them in our area? In Uniontown, you can take a tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright House on Kentuck Knob and discover its Fallingwater home just 20 minutes away! It’s by far one of our favorite Laurel Highlands activities.

We didn’t forget about art lovers. To get inspired and browse local galleries, head over to Greensburg. Visit the Westmoreland Museum of American Art to view regionally and nationally acclaimed artwork. Or, purchase tickets and catch a show at the circa 1926 Palace Theatre. During the summer, attend the free outdoor concert series of the Saint Clair Park for SummerSounds!
